Tips When Building a Pool in Your Backyard

Constructing a backyard pool is an exciting project that will make your home a haven in the summer. But before launching ahead with the build, consider the following tips.

Work out the Pool's Purpose

Before choosing a material for your pool, consider what its main purpose will be. If you want to swim laps, you could set up a long, narrow L-shaped pool around the side and back of your home. Or, you could build a round plunge pool in a courtyard if you don't have a lot of room and you want a place for summer relaxation. If you desire a pool for exercise in a cramped yard, you could consider a swim spa that pushes water towards you as you swim against it. Alternatively, you might want a large pool so that children and family members can all enjoy swimming, socialising, and general lazing around.

Custom Shape

You'll also need to choose a material for your pool. If you want a unique custom shape, then a concrete pool will allow you to get creative. You can work with pool builders to create your vision; the yard can be excavated and the concrete laid to make it come to life. You might want a water feature at one end to engender a calming vibe. Or you may want the pool to extend into a covered patio so that it's half indoors and half outdoors. You might prefer a pool with organic curves so that it feels natural.

The installation of concrete pools is involved, and it's not a quick process. So you'll have to put up with the inconvenience of a construction site in your yard for a while. Your pool builders may arrange for an expert to test the stability of the soil to ensure that the pool is unlikely to crack due to earth movements.

Pre-Made Pools

If you want a quicker build and are happy with custom shapes and sizes, you could opt for a fibreglass pool that can be lowered into an excavated hole in your yard. This process is less labour-intensive than making a concrete pool from scratch, and you can enjoy the pool sooner.

You can still put your unique touch on the design with your choice of decking and landscaping. Some decking materials are timber, composite, stone, and concrete. A landscape expert will help you make the most of your pool. You might automatically put it in the centre of the yard, but that may not be the best spot. If you placed the pool at the side of the garden instead, you may have more open lawn areas or space for extra garden beds, making the backyard more multifunctional. Your pool builder can help you work out the best location.
